Taps the seeds until they split like eyelids. Roots thicken to white lashes, wrinkles in darkness.
Grain casts stalk-shadows on the water and watches, listens out against the fresh wind for irrigation rites, for any chant it knows.

The night pulses with cicada shrills; with the deer whose bark
vaults through the tall grass; the soft pad of tensed paws.
The sky is needled: bright specks gleam through its meat,
and there the old stabwound gapes: the moon, that armour-curve, that shattered rib.

When the teeth snap shut tremors shake the jawbone, the tongue arching away from the grate of dentin.
The gums age
to purple bruises, caged by the scream of white on white.
Bones learn a morbid code about eating
until their slim lengths are gorged to a skeleton.
